Subconscious attitudes aren’t necessarily as well-formed as coherent thoughts, but they can be very ingrained. Unconscious biases, or implicit biases, are attitudes that are held subconsciously and affect the way individuals feel and think about others around them.
Unconscious bias in the workplace can negatively impact the diversity and inclusivity of recruiting, hiring and promotion practices. These biases may exist toward people of various races, ethnic groups, gender identities, sexual orientations, physical abilities and more. Unconscious biases are prejudices and stereotypes individuals have about certain groups of people that they aren’t consciously aware of having.
